Artikel 36: Temporary suspension of the exercise of royal authority

Artikel 36

The King may temporarily relinquish the exercise of the royal prerogative and resume the exercise thereof pursuant to Act of Parliament. The relevant Bill shall be presented by or on behalf of the King. The two Houses of the States General shall consider and decide upon the matter in joint session.

Please note: Only the Dutch-language version of the Constitution has legal effect. 

If the King himself is of the opinion that he is temporarily unable to exercise royal authority, the relinquishment and resumption of royal authority is regulated by law. The bill can only be submitted by the government, so the right of initiative does not apply. The States General consider this law in joint session.

A King cannot merely relinquish his duties partially.

A regent will exercise royal authority. This is regulated in Article 37.
