Remarks following the meeting of President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy i with President of Romania, Traian Basescu
Today, President Herman Van Rompuy and President Traian Basescu met to exchange views on the upcoming meetings in the European Council with a focus on the Economic and Monetary Union i and the Multiannual Financial Framework i. They also discussed the economic situation in the EU i and recent developments in Romania.
President Van Rompuy encouraged all parties in Romania to work together in a constructive spirit and respecting the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the role of all institutions.
President Van Rompuy appealed for full implementation of the July Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) report by the European Commission and looks forward to good progress by the end of the year.
The two presidents also exchanged views on the Issues Paper on Completing the Economic and Monetary Union and, in particular, the single supervisory mechanism for banks. The Issues Paper will help structure the consultations next week with all Member States and the European Parliament in order to prepare the interim report for the European Council in October and the final report in December.
