The Danish minister for European Affairs, Nicolai Wammen, today met with the Serbian President Boris Tadic in Belgrade to discuss the next steps in the EU integration process after the EU decided to grant candidate status to Serbia yesterday.

Nicolai Wammen states from Belgrade:

"I had very constructive talks with President Tadic in Belgrade today. It has been very encouraging. Today is obviously a day for celebration in Serbia. But our discussions also confirmed that the Serbian government is fully aware of the demanding task that lies ahead.

Enlargement negotiations are basically hard work that ensures that candidate countries are ready to abide by the rules of cooperation within the EU. This requires on-going changes and reforms in Serbia. But during my two visits to Serbia in a short time, I have felt a strong commitment and will to change. A modern Serbia and a modern Balkan region will be an important contribution to the continued development of Europe."
