More than 20 percent of young people in the EU are unemployed. Many young people also lack relevant education.

Friday, ministers for education in the EU meet in the Council to discuss how education and training can contribute to fighting youth unemployment in Europe.

The Minister for Children and Education, Christine Antorini occupies the presidency chiar for the first time in Brussels on Friday 10 February 2012.

The discussion amongst ministers for education will have its starting point in the Annual Growth Survey from the European Commission from November 2011 which shows that the youth unemployment is very high in some EU Member States.

Minister for Children and Education, Christine Antorini, is looking forward to the debate:

“We are going to have interesting discussions about initiatives in the field of education and education that can fight the high unemployment rate we see today. Even though Member States have different education systems, we can learn a lot from each others’ experiences. For example, Denmark has very good experiences with a dual approach in vocational education and training, because the link between theory and practice equip young people for the labour market. And on the other hand, we might be able to learn from other Member States’ initiatives to reduce drop out rates”, says Christine Antorini.

At the meeting, ministers will also adopt the joint report under the strategic framework for European cooperation in the field of education and training (ET 2020).

The report sets out the goals for the cooperation in 2012 - 2014 and is to ensure a closer link to the Europe 2020 Strategy for growth and jobs.
