Appeal of Speakers of the Sejm and Senate to the European Parliament for no decrease in the European Social Fund.

At the joint meeting of members of national parliaments of EU Member States and MEPs, running in Brussels until 6thDecember, Speaker of the Sejm Ewa Kopacz and Speaker of the Senate Bogdan Borusewicz appealed for the European Social Fund not to be decreased.

‘The European Union is at a particular moment in its history,’ said the Sejm Speaker Ewa Kopacz who stressed the importance of responsible decisions and solidarity in crisis with regard to social cohesion and demographic development. ‘If Europe is to meet specified targets and return to the path of sustainable development, it is necessary to take a closer look at developments in European society,’ stated Madam Speaker. ‘Regardless of the economic situation, we have to solve demographic problems,’ said Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz at the end of the Joint Parliamentary Meeting.

The series of debates continuing on into Tuesday was devoted to three important areas: the economic and budgetary consequences of demographic change, the problem of social cohesion in the context of regional development and social and equality aspects of employment and demographic changes.

Participating in the eleventh parliamentary conference under the Polish Presidency were the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, and the EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, Laszlo Andor. The meeting was co-organised by the Polish Sejm and the Senate as well as the European Parliament.
