Neelie Kroes spreekt via video op Poolse universiteit (en)
The University of Warsaw and Warsaw University of Technology are playing host to an international conference popularising visionary scientific initiatives.
Guests will include numerous scientists, representatives of the European Commission and Nobel Prize winners.
On 24th November Warsaw University of Technology and on 25th November the Universityof Warsaw will play host to 250 participants of the FET Flagship Pilots Midterm Conference. Scientists planning projects designed to revolutionise science and the economy on the basis of Information Technology will be coming together in Poland’s capital.
Six European consortiums creating the Pilot Projects - FuturICT, Graphene, Guardian Angels, HBP, ITFoM and RoboCom - are vying in a competition for two EU Flagship Projects. Each victorious team will receive €1 billion for their research.
The proposed research encompasses the following topics:

-Simulation of global socio-economic processes in order to curb financial crises

-New types of materials for nanoelectronics in the post-silicon era
-
-Low-energy IT systems for environmental and health monitoring
-
-Simulation of the human brain’s functioning from the neuron level to the cerebral cortex
-
-Utilisation of individual genetic, physiological and anatomical data in individual healthcare
-
-An empathetic robot adapting to individual human needs.
A number of Polish scientists employed by the competing consortiums will present the results of their research on flagship projects. Also participating are two Nobel Prize winners: Professor Albert Fert (discovered giant magnetoresistance) and Professor André Geim (discovered graphene). Also due to take part in the conference are EU Commission representatives responsible for allocating research funds in Europe as well as the representatives of many Polish and foreign agencies financing science.
The conference has been prepared jointly by the EU Commission and Poland’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education under the auspices of the country’s EU Council Presidency. A special letter has been sent to the participants by Professor Jerzy Buzek i, President of the European Parliament. EU Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes i has prepared an address in the form of a video recording. Honorary patronage of the conference has been assumed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Professor Barbara Kudrycka, the Rector of Warsaw University of Technology, Professor Wlodzimierz Kurnik and the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Professor Katarzyna Chalasinska-Macukow.
