Polen pleit voor solidariteit bij vergadering ECOFIN (en)
On 29 August 2011, Minister of Finance represented the Council presidency during the extraordinary meeting of the ECON of the European Parliament.
The session of Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee headlined “Restoring confidence in the markets - legislative and institutional responses” was also attended by the President of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker i, and European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn i.
The presidency pointed out, that faced with the deepening crisis in the euro zone in recent weeks, it is absolutely essential that the whole EU and its institutions - the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and European Commission - work hand-in-hand.
The presidency also voiced its firm support for the measures taken by the European Central Bank in the last weeks in response to the crisis.
Furthermore, Minister Rostowski recalled the words of the Prime Minister Donald Tusk, expressed upon taking over the presidency by the Republic of Poland, that to overcome the crisis Europe requires solidarity. It is a great challenge the EU had to face up against only a few weeks later. - For it to succeed, both countries with budgetary surpluses and those that need to pursue difficult reforms must understand that solidarity is in their best interest.
There is a particular attribute to solidarity - when exercised, one can expect substantial returns in the near future - the Minister said.
From the point of view of the presidency, further integration is an economic necessity, and should be pursued EU-wide. It is of particular importance to Poland who is yet to have joined the eurozone. Its significance is further boosted in light of the ongoing negotiations between the European institutions on the legislative package on economic governance.
