Europa herdenkt slachtoffers van totalitaire dictaturen (en)

Next Tuesday, 23rd August 2011, a European Remembrance Day Honouring Victims of Totalitarian Regimes will be observed for the first time.

The observances, being organised by the Ministry of Justice and the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), will be held in Warsaw, and patronage over the event has been assumed by the Polish Presidency.

The inauguration of the first European Remembrance Day Honouring Victims of Totalitarian Regimes is due to take place on 22 nd August 2011 (Monday). Participants will include the Chairman of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek.

‘When confirming his participation, the Chairman of the European Parliament thanked us for succeeding in establishing such an important and symbolic occasion for our countries thanks to the initiative of Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia,’ Minister of Justice Krzysztof Kwiatkowski said.

On Tuesday (23rd August), ceremonies will take place at the Warsaw Uprising Museum in Warsaw(ul. Grzybowska 79). More than a dozen European Union Ministers of Justice are expected to participate, as are representatives of European institutions dealing with accountability for the totalitarian past. They will be coming to Warsaw at the invitation of the Institute of National Remembrance.

22nd August (Monday)

1.30 PM — news conference of Minister of Justice Krzysztof Kwiatkowski and Chairman of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek.

Place: Permanent Representation of the European Parliament and European Commission in Warsaw (ul. Jasna 14/16a, Warsaw).

10.00 AM Conference begins

  • Presentations by the Polish Minister of Justice, Commissioner Viviane Reding, the President of the Institute of National Remembrance, the Director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum and others.

10.30-11.45 AM - Panel discussion conducted by the heads of national remembrance institutes on:

  • Settling accounts with totalitarian regimes;
  • The issue of rehabilitating victims;
  • Historical education.

11.45 AM - 12.00 PM - Break

12.00 -2.00 PM - Panel discussion by Ministers of Justice on:

  • The role of Ministers of Justice in preventing crimes by totalitarian regimes and holding them

1.45-2.00 PM - Signing of the Warsaw Declaration; *

* Following the panel discussion and the signing of the Warsaw Declaration, interested journalists will have a chance to meet and converse with Minister of Justice Krzysztof Kwiatkowski and the other ministers.

4.00 PM - Wreath laying at the Warsaw Uprising Memorial (Plac Krasinskich, Warsaw) by EU justice ministers, IPN President and representatives of European institutions.

4.30 PM - Wreath laying at the Memorial to the Fallen and Murdered in the East (near corner of Muranowska and Andersa streets, Warsaw).
