Buzek en Tusk bespreken samenwerking EP en voorzitterschap bij oplossen crisis op financiële markten (en)

Following the Eurozone summit on July 21 and the continuing volatility in the world financial markets, President Buzek i has met Polish PM Donald Tusk i to discuss possible ways of cooperation between the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers of the European Union.

Following the meeting with Tusk, EP President Buzek stated:

"The European Parliament is ready to assist national governments and parliaments in their effort to restore calm in financial markets and investor confidence.

In these times of nervousness, decisions need not be hasty, but they need to be taken in unity and be well thought over.

I urge financial investors to keep cool heads and refrain from any herd behaviour and panic as the fundamentals of the global economy do not merit it.

I am confident the EU will continue on the right path of reforms. The July Summit equipped the Eurozone with a very good tool-box to deal with any violent market swings and unjustified pessimism of mood that threatens to create a vicious circle driving up borrowing costs to unsustainable levels. I am confident that national parliaments in euro-zone i countries will approve quickly those new mechanisms.

I am also confident that the EP and the Council will agree soon the six-pack legislation on economic governance and fiscal discipline. In times when confidence is often lacking, political leaders need to keep calm and be able to take difficult decisions when needed. European leaders are fully aware of this duty. "
