Pools voorzitterschap wil start maken met doelstellingen energiebeleid voor 2050 (en)

On 14^th July 2011, the town of Belchatów will play host to a meeting of deputy energy ministers from EU Member States. Amongst the main topics under discussion will be the Energy Roadmap 2050 and investment needs in sustainable energy technologies. The agreements elaborated by the ministers are expected to be a turning point in the quest to limit the harmful effects of industry on the natural environment and climate.

Europehas set itself the ambitious goal of reducing 90% of CO₂ emissions by 2050. Up till now, however, there was no document coordinating the efforts being launched in that direction by individual countries. The discussion on Energy Roadmap 2050 in Belchatów has a chance to fill that void and shape the structure of European Union industry and power production for decades to come. The document containing the motions formulated in Belchatów will provide the impulse to develop a more efficient and low-emission economy.

In the view of Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak, EU plans to reduce CO₂ emissions should be carried out whilst maintaining the balanced development and competitiveness of the community’s economy. That will require significant spending on the development of power grids and gas networks as well as new solutions improving energy effectiveness. According to Economy Ministry experts, the European Union needs to prepare itself for impending changes in order to minimise adverse effects on the economy.

As Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak recalled, fossil fuels continue to be the basic source of EU energy production. In his view, it is essential to develop technologies using native raw materials but incorporating modern, low-emission solutions. These include CCS technologies, which may soon revolutionise the energy market. Already today, Poland wants to avail itself of that opportunity. In 2015, Europe’s first installation to detect and store carbon dioxide will go into operation in Belchatów.

The Polish Presidency will be represented at the meetings by Deputy Economy Minister Marcin Korolec. Also due to take part in the talks are Philip Lowe, the EC’s Director General for Energy, and Bo Diczfalusy, Director of Sustainable Energy Policy and Technology (international Energy Agency).
