Met dank overgenomen van Zweeds voorzitterschap Europese Unie 2e helft 2009 i, gepubliceerd op dinsdag 22 december 2009.

The Republic of Serbia has taken a historic step by applying for membership of the EU. On 22 December in Stockholm, President Boris Tadi? officially submitted Serbia’s membership application to Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt i.

Mr Reinfeldt, Mr Tadi? and EU Commissioner Olli Rehn i gave a press conference in connection with the membership application.

It will be the Spanish Presidency that will forward the application to the Commission, which will then in turn respond with a detailed assessment of the application.

Applications from Croatia, Albania and Montenegro have already been received by the Commission for assessment, and the Commission has also recommended that negotiations start for FYROM/Macedonia.
