Summary

The European Commission recently approved the Operational Programme for the Czech fisheries industry for the period 2007-2013. The total eligible public expenditure of the programme amounts to € 36,142,234, with EU assistance through the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) amounting to € 27,106,675. The entire amount will be allocated to the Convergence regions of the Czech Republic, which are all the regions with the exception of the capital region (Prague region).

The purpose and aim of the EU investment

During the previous programming period 2004 - 2006, the Czech Republic received € 4.1 million under the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG). As a result, 175 projects received financial support and 60 new jobs had been created by the end of 2006.

The new EU programme for 2007 - 2013 aims to build on the success of the previous programme and consolidate the preconditions for a sustainable and competitive fisheries and aquaculture sector that respects the environment and meets the demands of consumers and the food industry.

Priority axes

Priority 1: Adaptation of the EU fishing fleet

Priority 2: Aquaculture, processing and marketing of fishery and aquaculture products

This axis aims to increase value added, to decrease production costs, and to protect and improve the natural environment in relation to aquaculture, and to strengthen equality between men and women in the fisheries sector.

Priority 3: Measures of common interest

This axis seeks to support the modernisation of production by using innovative production methods and technologies, to increase fish consumption, especially of freshwater fish, in the Czech Republic, to protect and develop aquatic organisms while enhancing the aquatic environment, to improve fish workers' skills, and to upgrade scientific knowledge.

Priority 4: Sustainable development of fisheries areas

Priority 5: Technical assistance

Support is provided under this axis to ensure efficient implementation of the programme through targeted publicity and to improve the administrative framework of the Operational Programme for Fisheries.
