The opposition Labour Party, led by Russian-born millionaire Viktor Uspaskich, has won the elections in Lithuania, according to preliminary results.

With 80% of the ballots counted, the Labour Party won more than 30% of the votes, reports the BBC.

The governing coalition of the Social Democrats and New Union gained only about 20% of votes.

Mr Uspaskich has promised the voters to raise the pensions and salaries.

''We achieved this outcome by applying our management skills and professionalism to politics, and now we'll do the same to improve life in Lithuania,'' said Mr Uspaskich according to Bloomberg.

Before Sunday's poll, Mr Uspaskich claimed that his goal is not to become prime minister.
