Spain will have a referendum on the European Constitution in February, it emerged over the weekend.

The announcement comes after the government of José Luis Rodrígez Zapatero pledged to hold a vote as quickly as possible after the Constitution was agreed last month.

According to ABC, the vote could come towards the end of February.

Spaniards will be asked "Do you approve the treaty instituting a constitution for the European Union"?

Both the government and the leading opposition party will campaign for a yes vote.

Denmark, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic and the UK are amongst those also planning to hold polls.
