Meeting of the Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean
Turkey will host the 22nd meeting of the Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean with Protocols (COP 22) held biannually.
COP 22 will mark 45 years of environmental versatility and regional solidarity under the Barcelona Convention and its protocols. As the presiding country of the Council of the EU, Slovenia, together with the European Commission, will represent the EU and its members and lead the coordination of the positions of the EU Member States. Slovenia is a party to the Barcelona Convention.
Important topics of the session will be the adoption of the ambitious Medium-Term Strategy of the United Nations Environment Programme, the Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) for 2022-2027 and the adoption of the Strategic Action Programme for Biodiversity Conservation after 2020 (SAP BIO) and the designation of the entire Mediterranean as a sulphur-oxide-emission monitoring area (MED SOx ECA). The adoption of the Ministerial Declaration for the Mediterranean is planned at the ministerial session. The ministerial meeting is scheduled for 9 December.
Slovenia has proposed candidacy for the next, 23rd meeting of the parties to the COP23 Convention, to be held in December 2023.
