Ministers of the Interior to discuss the Pact on Migration and Asylum and the Schengen strategy
Ministers of the Interior will attend an informal Justice and Home Affairs meeting at the Brdo Congress Centre near Kranj on 15 July 2021.
Their agenda will focus on the priorities of Slovenian Presidency in the field of home affairs; a stronger Schengen area and finding appropriate solutions to achieve progress in formulating an integrated EU migration policy.
"A stronger Schengen area is of great importance to Slovenian Presidency," Minister Aleš Hojs said, adding "we started working on the Schengen strategy and the Schengen evaluation mechanism in the competent working body on the very first day of our Presidency". We would like the informal meeting to now start a discussion and formulate common guidelines on how the member states see the proposal on the Schengen code, which the European Commission is to present by the end of the year.

Ministers will review options for progress in negotiations on the Pact on Migration and Asylum during the working lunch, on the subject of which Minster Hojs announced: "We are expecting a sincere and open debate on how the Ministers see progress could be achieved. We are going to start from Slovenian Presidency's suggestion for acts with content not related to the most sensitive issues of the Pact to be excluded from the package, in order to achieve gradual progress."
The Ministers will also talk about combating crime in the digital age, especially the impact of digital files on the work of law enforcement authorities detecting and investigating criminal offences. They will be shown a practical demonstration of the impact of proposed artificial intelligence regulation on the work of law enforcement authorities. Minister Hojs will also present the conclusions of the June Brdo Process conference and invite to a discussion on provision of assistance to Western Balkan countries in addressing migration challenges.
Guests attending the informal meeting in Brdo will include Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson i, Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Juan Fernando López Aguilar i and Directors of EU Home Affairs agencies: Executive Director of European Asylum Support Office Nina Gregori, Executive Director of Frontex i Fabrice Leggeri, Executive Director of Europol Catherine De Bolle, and Krum Garkov, Executive Director of the European Agency for Operational Management of Large-scale information systems - eu-LISA.
