High Level Conference discusses the first decade of the Istanbul Convention

On 6 April next, at 8:30 am (Lisbon time), a high-level conference will be held on the “10th anniversary of signing the Istanbul Convention. The state of play”, organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

This conference is aimed at reviewing the ten years of the Istanbul Convention, analysing the impacts of the pandemic and, in particular, reflecting on the measures and concrete actions needed to ensure that the standards of the Convention are met, in accordance with the EU's fundamental priority of putting an end to all kinds of violence against women and girls and the new EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025.

Representatives of the European Parliament, Europol, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) and the European Women's Lobby, as well as academics and journalists, will be taking part in the event, which will have three thematic panel discussions.

The session will be opened by the Portuguese Minister of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Mariana Vieira da Silva, followed by speeches from the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli i, Slovenian Minister of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Janez Cigler Kralj, German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Franziska Giffey and the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić. The Portuguese Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality, Rosa Monteiro, will close the session.

Moderation will be by Portuguese journalists and communicators and the virtual audience will be able to ask questions.
