Main results

The video conference of the members of the EU i-Algeria Association Council took place on 7 December 2020.

This meeting (of the members of the EU-Algeria Association Council) enabled us to discuss issues of common interest and the implementation of our partnership priorities. Algeria is a very important partner for Europe, by virtue of its proximity and size, its role in the region and on the African continent, but also, and above all, the longstanding close ties between us. We are faced with both opportunities and challenges, and I am confident that we have the means and will to advance our partnership for the mutual benefit of our peoples.

Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

On this occasion, the EU and Algeria renewed the importance of international cooperation in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Within the framework of the 2017 Association Agreement, the two parties had an exchange on important issues in their relations such as governance, economic cooperation and trade, environment, energy and migration.

Following the meeting, the EU issued a press release.

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum also discussed developments in the region such as the Libyan and Malian crises, the Middle East Peace Process and the Western Sahara issue. In addition, they talked about regional cooperation, as well as the prevention of and the fight against terrorism and radicalisation.
