The Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union has reached today a provisional political agreement with the European Parliament, to be endorsed by the Council, regarding the re-use of public sector information proposal for a directive.

“Today’s success of the Romanian Presidency is a major step towards developing the European open data ecosystem, generating substantial savings by reusing data for a wide range of new products and services and creating new valuable ecosystems for the benefit of citizens, SMEs, etc. The Romanian Presidency contributes significantly to creating a common European data area, to Europe’s economic growth, to creating new jobs and new business opportunities”, said Alexandru Petrescu, Minister of Communications.

Public sector bodies produce and collect huge amounts of data, which is a valuable resource for the development of innovative digital services, artificial intelligence, large data volumes, and so on.

The legislative act agreed today will generate major benefits especially for small and medium-sized businesses by reducing barriers to market entry by reducing fees for re-using public sector information by increasing the availability of data by introducing new types of public data and data obtained through financing from public funds such as data held by public utilities and transport enterprises and research data, increasing business opportunities by encouraging the publication of dynamic data.
