As a knowledge institution, the ECA has to be at the forefront regarding developments in in public audit and its audit environment. Its staff is essential in the institution’s expertise and ability to do so. Training and professional development are key in being the professionals that bring added-value to the EU and its citizens. We have made training and professional development the special theme of this Journal edition to provide you insights into the variety of activities the ECA undertakes, and also those of the partners it cooperates with.

We start this April edition with an interview with the ECA Secretary-General Eduardo Ruiz García, who shares his views on learning and development and what it means for the ECA. Subsequently we cover many different aspects that a modern and motivating learning and development approach contains. Articles and interviews go into the different elements the ECA has built in its learning and development approach, what it means in the private audit sphere, and the various target groups in learning. We also present perspectives of internal and external trainers; the concept of lifelong learning; the essentials in learning and development according to experts in other EU institutions and organisations like the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European School of Administration.
