Zdzisław Krasnodębski elected Vice-President of the European Parliament
Parliament elected Polish MEP Zdzisław Krasnodębski (ECR) as its Vice-President on Thursday with 276 votes in favour. He replaces Mr Ryszard Czarnecki.
Mr Zdzisław Krasnodębski has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014. As Vice-President, he will now automatically become a member of the Bureau (President, 14 Vice-Presidents, 5 Quaestors), the body responsible for all matters relating to the internal running of Parliament.
Mr Czarnecki (ECR, Poland) was obliged to give up his role as Vice-President after he described fellow MEP Róża Thun (EPP, PL) as a “shmaltsovnik” (a deeply offensive Polish term for someone who blackmailed Jews, or Poles protecting Jews, during the Nazi occupation).
The proposal to end his term of office was passed by an absolute majority (447 votes to 196) by the full House on 7 February.
