Maldives: Council adopts conclusions

Met dank overgenomen van Raad van de Europese Unie (Raad) i, gepubliceerd op maandag 26 februari 2018.

On 26 February the Foreign Affairs Council adopted conclusions on the Maldives which assess the recent deterioration of the situation in the country.

The Council calls on the competent Maldivian institutions to lift immediately the state of emergency and restore all constitutionally guaranteed rights. The Council condemns the politically motivated arrests and calls for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

The Council calls on the Government of the Maldives to engage with the leaders of the opposition in a genuine dialogue. It considers that the current situation is not in accordance with the principles of democratic rule and separation of powers, and that if the situation does not improve, it may consider targeted measures.
