The President of the European Court of Auditors i, Klaus-Heiner Lehne i, today welcomed the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker i, and the Commissioners to the annual meeting between the two institutions, held at the Court in Luxembourg. The purpose of the annual meeting is for the Court’s Members and the Commissioners to discuss their respective ongoing work, as well as any topical issues and matters of common concern.

This year, the discussions centered on the themes of the reflection papers on the future of Europe, such as social matters, economic and monetary union, issues related to defence, security and migration, globalisation risks and opportunities, and the future of EU finances. “The work on all the themes from the reflections on the future of Europe is important to continue reinforcing the trust of citizens in the EU and its institutions, and we also contribute to it as the EU’s auditors,” said President Lehne.

As the guardian of EU citizens’ financial interests, the Court carries out its audit work across the various areas of the EU budget and delivers products fit for the future of the EU’s finances. In particular, the Court’s thematic audit chambers examine the implementation of the EU’s revenue and spending policies and programmes, ensure accountability and value for money and make recommendations on improving future programmes.

Later this month, the Court is expected to issue a briefing paper on the future of the EU’s finances, in which it will focus in particular on the future multiannual financial framework, the EU’s multi-year financial plan.
