At its meetings of 22* and 29** January 2018, the Council of the European Union appointed or reappointed eight Members of the European Court of Auditors (ECA):

  • Ms Bettina Michelle Jakobsen (Denmark)*
  • Mr Baudilio Tomé Muguruza (Spain)*
  • Mr Pietro Russo (Italy)*
  • Mr João Figueiredo (Portugal)*
  • Mr Hannu Takkula (Finland)*
  • Mr Tony Murphy (Ireland)**
  • Ms Eva Lindström (Sweden)**

for the period from 1 March 2018 to 29 February 2024;

  • Ms Iliana Ivanova (Bulgaria)*

for the period from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2024.

The Council took its decisions on the basis of proposals by the respective Member States and after consultation with the European Parliament.

Mr Takkula, Mr Murphy and Ms Lindström will replace the ECA’s outgoing Members Mr Ville Itälä, Mr Kevin Cardiff and Mr Hans Gustaf Wessberg, whose terms in office are due to expire on 28 February 2018.

The current terms of the reappointed Members Ms Jakobsen, Mr Muguruza, Mr Russo and Mr Figueiredo will also expire on 28 February 2018; Ms Ivanova’s current term is due to expire on 31 December 2018.

The terms in office of ECA Members are renewable. The Treaty requires them to perform their duties in complete independence and in the general interest of the European Union.

The College of Members will meet, in its new composition, to decide to which chambers the new Members will be assigned and determine their specific duties. They will be sworn in at the Court of Justice of the EU at a later date.

The ECA’s organisation chart and governance structure are available on its website eca.europa.eu and will be updated in due course.
