President of the Republic discussed the future of shared infrastructure projects at her meeting with the Prime Minister of Poland

President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Kadriorg with the Prime Minister of Poland, Beata Szydło. The meeting focused on cooperation between the two countries in the spheres of security and large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the construction of Rail Baltic and connecting the Baltic energy networks to Western Europe.

"Estonia and Poland share a very similar understanding of the international security situation and we work well together in ensuring safety along NATO's eastern wing," said the Head of State. The President highlighted the contribution of Poland to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and expressed her hope that the Polish air forces will soon also take part in NATO's Baltic air security mission.

The meeting focused on economic cooperation between the two countries and, above all, large infrastructure projects that offer connections for the region in general. "Rail Baltic is not merely the project of three Baltic states; this is a new transport corridor to link Northern Europe to the very heart of Europe. It is highly important for Poland that Rail Baltic is extended southwards. This is what Prime Minister Szydło confirmed at the meeting and I am extremely pleased to hear it," said President Kaljulaid.

The contribution of Poland is also important for the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity grid to the Central European network, and the Head of State expressed her hope that the technical and political agreements that are required to implement the process will be concluded this year.

In addition, Estonia's priorities during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the future of the European Union were discussed.
