The annual meeting of EU and ACP ministers was held on 5 May 2017 under the co-chairmanship of Mr George Vella, minister of foreign affairs of Malta, president-in-office of the Council of the European Union, and Mr Abraham Tekeste, minister of finance and economic cooperation of the federal democratic republic of Ethiopia, president-in-office of the ACP Council of ministers.
EU and ACP ministers discussed the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Climate Change. They exchanged on their respective preparation processes and possible areas of convergence ahead of the upcoming global milestone meetings later this year: the high-level political forum on sustainable development in New York in July, and the 2017 UN climate change conference (COP 23) in Bonn, in November.
International agreements on climate action (background information)
Following up on the discussions started in 2015, ministers exchanged views on migration and on the progress made regarding the implementation of the joint Valletta action plan and the EU trust fund for Africa. They also discussed ways to enhance cooperation between ACP and EU countries in this regard.
A new migration partnership framework (background information)
Ministers also took stock of the ongoing reflection processes on each side on the future of the EU-ACP relations after 2020, given the expiry of the Cotonou partnership agreement on 29 February 2020.
