High Representative Mogherini meets President Nyusi of Mozambique

Federica Mogherini i today met the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, during his official visit to the EU, continuing the dialogue initiated in Maputo during the HRVP's visit to Mozambique in February, on the main areas of EU-Mozambique relations.

The two discussed how the renewed conflicts in Mozambique affect the people, economic development and democratic stability. Mogherini underlined that the EU is ready to support Mozambique's efforts to bring an immediate end to all forms of political violence and to back Mozambican engagement for a renewed and sustainable political consensus.

She stressed the importance of agreeing upon a framework for a political solution and commended President Nyusi's commitment to restore a trustful and peaceful environment which would help facilitate a negotiated solution. President Nyusi welcomed the EU's engagement in supporting Mozambique to overcome the current crisis.

The EU and Mozambique have a long-standing and wide-ranging partnership and there is commitment on both sides to deepen it further. The two looked at how mutual cooperation can contribute to the sustainable and inclusive growth needed to overcome Mozambique's development challenges, on the basis of partnership, transparency and mutual trust.
