U-Multirank reviews more than 1,300 universities

Today the EU-funded project U-Multirank published its third and largest global ranking, helping students, teachers and employers to make the right choice about universities from more than 90 countries.

U-Multirank is the first global ranking that allows people to compare universities according to a broad mix of criteria: research performance, teaching and learning, knowledge transfer, international orientation and regional engagement.

This year's ranking shows that European universities lead the world in regional impact but can still do more. This was a central issue in the Commission's recent consultation on the modernisation of higher education: only one fifth of the more than 1,400 respondents considered that universities play a strong role in national or regional innovation, while three-quarters strongly supported more EU level cooperation in this field.

The project is funded by the EU's Erasmus i+ programme, which allows more than four million young Europeans to study, work, train and volunteer in another country between 2014 and 2020. In the future, an independent non-profit organisation will manage the ranking on an open-source basis.
