Martin Schulz on the death of Hans-Dietrich Genscher

I am saddened today by the passing of Hans-Friedrich Genscher. We lose a great, intelligent and influential politician. He was a convinced European, who significantly contributed to Germany's reunification and always fought for European integration. His life-time's achievements will never be forgotten.

I myself am very grateful for the numerous, enriching encounters I had with him.

I wish his family and friends my deepest sympathy in this difficult time.
