3 days of intense diplomacy in Munich

An intense three days at the Munich Security Conference saw EU High Representative Federica Mogherini i attend the Quartet meeting on the Middle East Peace Process and also the International Support group (ISSG) for Syria.

After long talks on Thursday the ISSG agreed on a cessation of hostilities in Syria, allowing access of humanitarian aid to relieve the suffering of civilians. To this end the High Representative confirmed to the BBC that the EU will open a humanitarian office in Damascus.

Federica Mogherini also took part in a panel discussion with Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal. She also met Jens Stoltenberg i, NATO Secretary General, to talk about cooperation between the EU and NATO in the Aegean. The future of Libya was also in the spotlight at the Munich Security conference when the High Representative met a delegation from the House of Representatives to discuss the formation of a new Government.

During the three days she also had meetings with Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko i, with Slovenia’s President Borut Pahor i, with the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Masoud Barzani, with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and with Moldova’s Foreign Minister Andrei Galbur amongst others.

North Korea's nuclear actives were also under scrutiny when she met South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.

Federica Mogherini also discussed the perspectives of a peace process between Israel and Palestine with Tzipi Livni.
