High Representative Federica Mogherini i today attended the International Syria Support Group meeting in Munich, which aimed to call all actors to stick to the commitments made in December, including the support of talks, the commitment to a ceasefire, the commitment to confidence-building measures and humanitarian access.

“This is the chance for the process to not only be protected, but also to continue and deliver,” she said ahead of the talks. “Let me say this is not just for the sake of diplomacy or for the sake of geopolitics. This is for the sake of human lives. We are talking about numbers here. We are talking about people. People who have been suffering from a war for five years now and who have found again in the last weeks a small glimpse of hope and we have the responsibility to keep that hope alive, to protect their lives and today this is what we will try to do.”

“The future of Syria and Syrians is in our hands and we have all, as international community, the responsibility to protect these lives,” she added.

Before the meeting, Mogherini met UN envoy Staffan de Mistura and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
