High Representative/Vice President (HRVP) Federica Mogherini today met senior representatives of the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The National Dialogue Quartet is made up of the Tunisian General Labour Union, the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, the Tunisian Human Rights League and the National Bar Association.

The HR/VP paid tribute to the architects of a unique transition towards democracy in which civil society played a decisive role in preserving national unity and democracy, making possible the adoption of a Constitution that protects the principles of a pluralistic society, the rule of law and human rights.

With the prize winners, the HRVP discussed the current situation in Tunisia, and how the EU can best support the country in addressing current challenges, such as its economic and social development, in particular employment, the role of youth and women in society and the fight against terrorism.

“The Quartet's determination and sense of responsibility serve as a model for crisis resolution in the region,” Mogherini said after the announcement of the Prize. “Only national unity and the promotion of democracy pave the way towards peace and stability.”

“We pay tribute to the whole of Tunisian civil society and confirm once again our commitment to supporting its efforts, alongside the democratically elected authorities, to consolidate the democratic transition and ensure that Tunisia remains a source of inspiration and hope for people throughout the world.”

Among the Tunisian delegation were Mohamed Fadhel Mahfoudh, Batonnier de l'Ordre National des Avocats, Sami Tahri, Secrétaire Général Adjoint de l'UGTT, Lassad Yaakoubi, Secrétaire général du syndicat de l'Enseignement Secondaire, Kais Sellami, Président de la Fédération Nationale des Technologies et de la Communication, Vice-Président de l'UTICA and Messaoud Romdhani, Vice-Président de la LIgue Tunisienne des Droits de l'Homme chargé des Relations Extérieures.
