After the downing of a Russian jet plane on the Turkish-Syrian border, the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini i, in separate phone calls with the Russian and Turkish Foreign Ministers, stressed the need to avoid further escalation, preserve the diplomatic talks on Syria and unite forces against Da'esh.

EU High Representative Mogherini conveyed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov her condolences for the Russian soldier killed yesterday. Mogherini and Lavrov agreed on the need to safeguard the diplomatic track for the Syrian crisis opened in Vienna, and to proceed with the timeline decided at the last meeting of the International Syria Support Group, as the most effective basis for effectively defeating Daesh on the ground.

Yesterday Mogherini addressed the same messages to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu: in this conversation, she reiterated the importance of avoiding any further escalation and to advance the political process launched in Vienna.

The HRVP has also been in close and constant contact with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg i.
