Iran nuclear deal: another step towards implementation

Today is Adoption Day of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) related to the Iranian nuclear programme.

This is another important milestone that brings us a step closer to the beginning of implementation of the JCPOA, to which we are strongly committed. The agreement reached in July was the culmination of years of difficult and complex negotiations. But the political will, mutual respect and leadership of all parties made it happen. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) which was agreed is about ensuring the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear programme.

The negotiations were led by EU High Representative Federica Mogherini i, and brought together foreign ministers from France, Germany, the UK, China, Russia and the US, with their Iranian counterpart.

In a joint statement today, High Representative Mogherini and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, said: "All sides remain strongly committed to ensuring that implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action can start as soon as possible. To this end, we will make all the necessary preparations."

Iran will now start implementing all of its nuclear-related commitments. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will make the necessary preparations to monitor and verify these steps.

Meanwhile, the EU today adopted the legislative framework to lift all of its nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions. This will take effect on Implementation Day, simultaneously with the IAEA-verified implementation of agreed nuclear measures by Iran. The US will also take the measures as agreed in the JCPOA.

The Joint Commission of the countries involved will meet at the level of political directors in Vienna tomorrow (19 October) to take forward preparations for implementing the JCPOA.
