Congratulation letter by President Donald Tusk to the Prime Minister of Portugal Pedro Passos Coelho

On behalf of the European Council, I wish to congratulate you on winning the elections in Portugal, which paves the way for your second term as Prime Minister. The recent economic results of Portugal, and these elections, show that the ambitious programme of economic reforms and the measures to ensure sound public finances that your government has adopted over that last four year have paid off.

I hope that over the next years Portugal will benefit from the political stability that is necessary to face the challenges at hand.

I trust that under your leadership Portugal will continue to contribute to the development of the European Union. Portugal and the entire European Union need a strong economic recovery that bring about jobs and prosperity, progress in the completion of the monetary union, and strong responses to the migration challenge and geopolitical threats.

I look forward to, once again, working closely with you and welcoming you at the European Council of 15 and 16 October.
