Informal Meeting of EU Ministers of Defence in Luxembourg
The informal meeting of Defence Ministers of the European Union will be held in Luxembourg at the European Convention Centre Luxembourg (ECCL) on 2 and 3 September 2015.
Chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Étienne Schneider, the first session of the Meeting of EU Defence Ministers will focus on the follow-up of the European Council in June 2015. The Defence Ministers will discuss the implementation of the European Council's conclusions, and will focus on key issues, such as hybrid threats, strengthening support capabilities to third countries, and defence capabilities. Michel Barnier i, special advisor to Jean-Claude Juncker i on matters of Defence, will present the views of the European Commission on defence and security in the European Union.
In the second session, chaired by the Commission Vice-President, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini i, Ministers will be briefed on the current CSDP operations (common security and defence policy). The Ministers will focus particularly on the EUNAVFOR MED operation, launched in July to combat human traffickers in the Mediterranean, in which Luxembourg is participating.
Prior to the meeting, Étienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, declared: "The informal meeting in Luxembourg will enable Defence Ministers to openly discuss the role of defence for security in and around the European Union. The threats are numerous and diverse, and we need to be equipped to face up to the challenges."
