Parliament spokesperson Marjory van den Broeke discusses Commission proposals to relocate 40,000 asylum seekers and refugees across EU member states, which will go before the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday.

Van den Broeke says the proposals are an “emergency” response to the escalating crisis in the Mediterranean. She adds that Parliament will have co-decision powers on a future, more permanent solution. According to van den Broeke, several MEPs wish to raise the numbers relocated to 50,000, and impose binding quotas on each EU country.
