Anneli Jäätteenmäki elected as a new EP vice-president

Anneli Jäätteenmäki i (ALDE, FI) was elected in a secret ballot (Rule 15) as a new vice-president of the European Parliament on Wednesday, following the resignation of Olli Rehn i (ALDE, FI), who was elected to the Finnish parliament in April. Fabio Massimo Castaldo i (EFDD, IT) was also a candidate for the post.

Results of the votes:

Anneli Jäätteenmäki: 301 votes in favour.

Fabio Massimo Castaldo: 285 votes in favour.

Ms Jäätteenmäki takes the place of Olli Rehn as the tenth of the European Parliament’s 14 Vice-Presidents. Olli Rehn stepped down from the office of Member of the European Parliament after being elected to the Finnish Parliament in April.

Vice-Presidents may replace the President in performing his or her duties when necessary, including chairing plenary sittings (Rule 23). They are also members of the Bureau, the body responsible for all administrative, staff and organisational matters in Parliament.

Ms Jäätteenmäki was elected to the Parliament for the first time in 2004 and was re-elected in 2009 and 2014.
