Ljubljana, Slovenia

Violeta Bulc i, the EU's Transport Commissioner will today meet with over 400 citizens from Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and Italy in a cross-border dialogue in Ljubljana. What does the EU do to create growth and jobs? How can the EU Investment Plan help completing the missing infrastructure links in the region and inject blood into the economy? How can the connectivity of regional airports and sea ports be improved? How will the EU tackle youth unemployment and support SMEs? These are some of the topics of the discussion between Commissioner Bulc and citizens from four EU Member States.

"It takes several hours to get by train from Klagenfurt to Ljubljana which are only 80 kilometres apart. Paris and Brussels are over 260 kilometres away and the train ride takes only a good hour. Why is that so? These are real problems, and I am looking forward to hear their reactions, confront different views and get direct feedback from them on such issues. I'm sure we'll have a lively debate," said Commissioner Bulc ahead of the event.

The event is moderated by Igor E. Bergant, a news anchor from TV Slovenia. The working language is Slovene, and interpretation is provided into English, Croatian, German and Italian. The event will be broadcast live by RTV Slovenia and re-transmitted by online news portal MMC RTV SLO. The online audience will be able to join the debate via Twitter with hashtags #EUdialogues #Ljubljana.

Venue: Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The Citizens' Dialogue starts at 17:00 CET

The Citizens' Dialogue in Ljubljana is part of the European Youth Week 2015 which encourages and helps young people to take part in civil society and in the employment market.

Background

The concept of Citizens' Dialogues builds on the model of "town hall meetings" or local fora during which politicians listen and debate with citizens about policies and decisions being taken.
