United Nations : Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Review Conference
The 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) began its work on 27 April.
The four weeks long Review Conference, chaired by Ambassador Taous Feroukhi from Algeria, enjoyed a smooth opening on 27 April at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The EU delegation is led by HR/VP Federica Mogherini i who delivered the EU general statement on the second day of the Conference. Nine non-EU States aligned themselves with this statement.
In the margins of the Conference HR/VP Mogherini held a bilateral meeting with CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo. Mogherini confirmed her willingness to maintain her membership in the CTBTO's Group of Eminent Persons (GEM). The parties agreed to explore the possibility of the EU hosting a GEM meeting on the twentieth anniversary of opening up for signatures of the CTBT in 2016.
The objective of the NPT is:
to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology,
to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and
to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.
The EU will organise two side-events in the margins of the Review Conference, one to promote the universalisation of the Hague Code of Conduct and another presenting the EU as a global actor in the field of nuclear safety and security.
