Brussels mulls probe of South European banks

The European Commission is considering an investigation into whether Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain have illegally given state aid to their banks by allowing deferred tax assets to count as core capital, reports the Financial Times. The four countries' banks hold some €40bn in deferred tax assets as core capital.
