Press Statement by President Donald Tusk after his meeting with Moldavan Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Raad i, gepubliceerd op donderdag 26 februari 2015.

I am very happy to welcome Prime Minister Gaburici here in Brussels today on his first official visit abroad. Moldova is a key partner for the European Union and we look forward to continued close cooperation in the weeks, months and years ahead.

The EU-Moldovan Association Agreement, which we signed last year, brings a new depth to our relationship. Moldova is transforming itself into a modern European state. Implementing the agreement, and pushing ahead with much-needed reforms, will speed up this process.

The full benefits of the Association Agreement will over time become tangible to the Moldovan people. Prime Minister Gaburici and I discussed the need for more action to fight corruption, reform the justice sector and improve investment conditions. Moreover, we agree that critical weaknesses in the financial sector need to be addressed urgently.

The European Union will continue to stand by Moldova in this process, financially as well as with technical support. The Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area will integrate Moldova with the world's largest single market. More trade will create unprecedented opportunities for businesses, boost inward investment and create new jobs in Moldova.

Closer cooperation with the European Union equally benefits Moldova's international partners and strengthens the country's internal cohesion.

I have underlined to the Prime Minister that the Union supports all efforts towards a comprehensive and peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. This is based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova with a special status for Transnistria.

We also discussed Russia and the crisis in Ukraine. The European Union will remain a friend of Moldova in times of major regional tensions. We look forward to holding our first Association Council soon.

Thank you. The floor is yours, Chiril.
