Nils Torvalds MEP (ALDE) - the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Indirect Land-Use Change (ILUC) - joins leading environment journalist Sonja van Renssen to discuss the future of biofuels.

A proposal to reform EU biofuels policy is back on the Parliament’s agenda for a second reading. Rapporteur Torvalds has two weeks to turn 374 proposed amendments on ILUC into acceptable compromises. These will be voted on by the Parliament’s Environment Committee on 24 February. In the interview, the Finnish liberal MEP says that the current biofuels debate “resembles chaos” and negotiations will be complicated. There are disagreements looming with Member States over a cap on conventional biofuels, a target for advanced biofuels and above all, ILUC factors. Torvalds states that” low-ILUC risk” biofuels lack a definition, but supports the idea of establishing a separate target for bioethanol.
