HRVP's Mogherini's first week with the Latvian Presidency to the EU
HR/VP Federica Mogherini i began the first week of 2015 by chairing the European Commission Group for External Action, and attending two high level opening ceremonies in Riga; for the Latvian Presidency to the Council of the European Union and for the European Year for Development 2015.
Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, headed to Riga to open the Latvian Presidency to the EU. "This will be six intense months on the foreign policy and on the security dimension. And I know I can count on you and on Latvia for being a strong, reliable, balanced partner to navigate in these next 6 months together," Mogherini said at the press point with Edgars Rinkēvičs, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
On Friday Mogherini opened the European Year for Development 2015 - the first ever European Year to deal with the European Union's external action and Europe’s role in the world. In her speech, Mogherini mentioned three challenges that we face in development: "(…) whether the emerging economies and other advanced developing countries accept to take responsibilities in terms of their own commitments and also in terms of support to others in the new framework. (…) changes in our societies and our policies that we need in order to be ready for internal changes (…) to address all dimensions of sustainable development."
