"Pecorino Crotonese"has gained recognition as a protected designation of origin product. The European Commission has authorised the application to register the Italian cheese as a PDO. It is a hard, semi-cooked cheese produced exclusively from whole sheep’s milk.

The geographical area of production is a homogeneous area in both geographical and historical/cultural terms and largely overlaps with the territory of the Marquessate of Crotone. It can be sold fresh (white rind, soft, regular and creamy body, milky white in colour), semi-hard (thick and brown rind, firm body, intense flavour) or mature (hard and brown rind, slightly straw-coloured body, intense and slightly piquant flavour).

It is the 1250th EU product with protected designation of origin.
