Statement by Commissioner Avramopoulos on the appointment of the new Executive Director of Frontex

"I am pleased that after several months of uncertainties we have now a new leadership for the EU's border management Agency Frontex. Following today's decision taken by the Management Board of Frontex, Mr. Fabrice Leggeri has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Agency.

I am confident that the new Executive Director will be able to take over smoothly the Agency’s management and work together with the Member States’ border guard authorities on further developing operational cooperation at the external borders of the European Union.

I also wish to thank Gil Arias for the work done as Acting Director and ensuring that Frontex has been able to continue to provide assistance to the Member States in challenging circumstances".
