The Security Jam is over

In 54 hours the Jam brought together almost 2,300 participants from 114 countries contributing 2,800 insightful posts, making the 2014 Jam another great success. “EU as a global security broker” was the most popular forum with the most active discussion addressing the credibility of the EU as a global power.

The best idea in this forum was awarded to a jammer answering to EEAS Deputy Secretary General ed thread on the EU as a security provider. "In order for the EU to be a serious exporter of security, it must first address the internal structures of its own organization. The EU was created as an organization to prohibit a new war. Thus, those functions or elements, must be addressed, changed or appended in order for the organization to be a credible security body", wrote Gazmend Huskaj from the Swedish Armed Forces. EUMS Lt. Gen. Wolfgang Wosolsobe launched a debate on the military aspects of the EU being a global security broker and Amb. Gabor Iklody questioned the EU as a security provider, which created a wealth of replies.

Case studies on Ukraine-Russia and Syria led to lively debates throughout the Jam. Highlights on this included NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow clearly stating that there can be no talks with IS, but that it must be defeated, and SACEUR General Philip Breedlove describing the Ukraine crisis “an era-defining event”.
