ISIS security threat to be discussed with EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator in EP on September 24th

The security threat posed by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere in the world will be debated with EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove i at a meeting of Security and Defence Subcommittee and Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs on Wednesday. The debate starts at 15:00.

Florence Gaub, Senior Analyst at the EU Institute for Security Studies, and John O'Rourke, Head of the EEAS "Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Iraq" division, will also join in the debate.

The European Parliament as a whole debated developments in Iraq and Syria last week and passed a resolution on Thursday 18 September. MEPs called for intensified EU support to Iraqi national and local authorities in their fight with ISIS, including appropriate military assistance, urged the international community to cut off ISIS resources and called for strengthened cooperation among EU member states in checking up on EU nationals who have joined the ISIS insurgency.
