The Europe Lecture 2014
Former President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga and China-specialist Jonathan Holslag delivered the 13th Europe Lecture on October 28th, 2014. This year, the theme of the Europe Lecture was 'Europe in the World: Peace and Security'.
In light of the current instability in Europe's neighbourhood and the recent power shifts in the international realm, the topic is of major interest.

Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga
Dr. Vīķe-Freiberga was born in Latvia and has lived in Canada for 53 years. Her commitment to the Latvian people brought her back to her home country, where Vike-Freiberga became very popular during and after her presidency.
She personally took care of the EU- and NATO-membership of Latvia. Now, Vaira Vike-Freiberga is president of the World Leadership Alliance 'Club de Madrid' and is concerned with the worldwide fostering of democratic development.
Jonathan Holslag
Jonathan Holslag - China specialist and lecturer International Politics at Brussels University - is only 32 years old, but already a respected advisor of European Commissioners, national politicians and international organizations.
He has excellent knowledge of China and the rest of Asia, and regularly summarizes complex ideas in debates on international news channels as CNN, BBC, Bloomberg, CCTV and Al Jazeera. Mr. Holslag has a strong interest in Europe's position in the global order, and tries to combine theoretical research with public engagament.
