Martin Schulz on the passing of Adolfo Suárez

Upon learning of the death of Adolfo Suárez, the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz i stated:

“Today Spain loses Adolfo Suárez, the Prime Minister that made possible the transition to democracy after the dictatorship of General Franco. A transition that created the conditions of freedom, mutual understanding and democratic stability necessary for Spain to take its rightful place in Europe.

I pay tribute to a man of dialogue and generosity. A statesman who placed the common interest of his fellow citizens before his political ambitions in order to heal the social fracture in Spanish society.

In this sad moment, my thoughts, affection and condolences are with his family and friends and with all Spanish citizens.”
